Hubertus Heil: Federal Minister of Labour and Social Affairs

Background

Wolfgang-Hubertus Heil (born November 3, 1972) is a German politician of the Social Democratic Party (SPD). He has served as Federal Minister of Labour and Social Affairs since March 2018.

Career

Heil began his political career in local politics in Lower Saxony. He served as Mayor of Peine from 2006 to 2013. In 2013, he was elected to the German Bundestag, where he served as parliamentary state secretary in the Federal Ministry of Labor and Social Affairs from 2013 to 2017.

In March 2018, Heil was appointed Federal Minister of Labour and Social Affairs by Chancellor Angela Merkel. He is responsible for overseeing Germany's labor and social welfare policies, including unemployment benefits, pensions, and healthcare.

Key Policies

As Minister of Labour and Social Affairs, Heil has implemented a number of key policies, including:

  • Raising the minimum wage to €12 per hour
  • Expanding access to childcare
  • Reforming the pension system
